Born Spring 2013.
Kilter was born when Ian started shaping holds again behind the Beach -the big comp wall – at The Spot Gym in Boulder (US). He quickly outgrew the space as he shaped hundreds of holds in many different styles. Kilter got a pre-molding order and with that money was able to mold and release 36 sets in 2013.
Already Voted Number 1 in the US. Twice.
From there Kilter has grown steadily to nearly 1400 holds with the goals of fulfilling the needs of commercial gyms and competition setters by providing well-designed, aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and engaging holds for all grade ranges.
What do you mean, you don’t know Ian!?
Ian Powell is Kilter’s main shaper.
A fine art sculptor who has been climbing since 1985 and shaping holds since 1991, Ian is widely regarded as one of the best hold shapers in the world.
In the mid-90s Ian started E-Grips, then later sold it and retired from climbing for a while. In 2013 he started shaping again and made a whole new line for
Kilter. Ian has an artist’s eye for subtle detail, a setter’s perspective on the function of the holds, and a climber’s understanding of comfort, all of which make his Kilter shapes some of the best climbing holds available in the world.
Here’s where you might have spotted Kilter’s already iconic holds:
- Toronto IFSC Bouldering World Cup 2015
- Yank’n Yard 2015 in New Mexico (featured in the Red Bull Video on climbing, 2016).
- IFSC Bouldering World Cup 2016 in Japan
- Plus various Lead Climbing World Cups around the world…
